The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) published a final rule that details requirements for implementation of the new “information blocking” rules put in place under the 21st Century Cures Act, which is intended
to enable more widespread access, use and exchange of patient data. The final rule requires all physicians to come into compliance with the new requirements by April 5, 2021.
The rule is designed to give patients and their healthcare providers secure access to health information. It also aims to increase innovation and competition by fostering an ecosystem of new applications to provide patients with more choices in their
healthcare.
Considering the number of nuanced issues related to the Information Blocking provision, including understanding and applying the exceptions, the MMS has compiled several resources that will be helpful to our members. The MMS will continue to monitor and
provide additional guidance through future updates. A more detailed overview and frequently asked questions can be found below.
