Research Poster Submission Guidelines

  • All research must be original work and not published previously in a journal or other copyrighted publication.  The research must be a project in which the author was directly involved. Works previously presented at another poster symposium or similar event will not be excluded
  • Primary author must be a resident/fellow/medical student and must be a member of the Massachusetts Medical Society.  Co-authors are strongly encouraged to join the MMS.
  • Primary author(s) must be able to attend the symposium on Wednesday, March 19, 2025 from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and present their work.
  • Research completed during medical school, residency, or fellowship will be considered as long as the abstract is submitted within nine months of the author’s training end-date.
  • A primary author may submit a maximum of two abstracts; however, the author will be eligible to exhibit only one of their submitted abstracts, if both are accepted.

Abstract Submissions

The deadline for Abstract Submissions is Monday, January 13, 2025. Authors will be notified of acceptance or rejection by Monday, February 10th.

Abstract Categories

  • Basic Research – implies the use of scientific method to derive original data in the laboratory.
  • Clinical Research – implies the use of scientific method to derive original data in the patient care setting.
  • Clinical Vignettes – involves the presentation of one or more patient encounters that illuminate unique observation of a known disease, or that describe a novel disease process.
  • Health Policy/Medical Education – refers broadly to any original, systematic, scientific analysis of, or model for, health care education or health care policy.

Abstract Guidelines

  • Submissions (abstract text; not including Title, Authors’ names, Institution affiliations, or References) should be a maximum of 400 words.
  • If not using a provided template, please submit in a Microsoft Word document with 1-inch margins and text in 11 point Arial font. No PDFs please.
  • Research abstracts should include: Introduction, Methods, Results and Discussion Sections. References to be included as needed.
  • Clinical Vignette abstracts should include: Introduction, Case Presentation, Clinical Impacts/Relevance and Discussion

Poster Guidelines

  • Posters must be no larger than four feet by four feet in dimension.
  • Text should be 16 point font or greater.
  • Poster should include: title, authors' names and affiliations.
  • Scientific posters should follow IMRAD format (Introduction, Methods, Results and Discussion).

Prizes awarded in each of the four* categories:

  • First Prize: ($200)
  • Second Prize: ($150)
  • Third Prize: ($100)
  • Honorable Mention Awards of $50 may also be presented at our judges’ discretion.
  • Prizes will not distinguish between medical students and residents/fellows. Winners will be published on the MMS website and notification letters will be sent to program directors/deans.
  • Please note that accepted abstracts may be printed in an abstract book or available electronically to attendees the day of the Poster Symposium. If you are not willing to have your abstract distributed as part of your participation, please do not enter a submission in this Research Poster Symposium.

*The MMS also reserves the right to combine categories (such as Clinical and Basic Research) if a category receives a limited number of abstract submissions.
