Interactive Medical Media | NEJM Group
Originally from Portugal, I always liked drawing, but first earned a degree in biology while becoming a Fulbright scholar. My wife and I started our own business in the medical graphics field and then returned to the United States in 2004. Currently, I'm implementing new web and digital technologies for the
Journal,
and also creating visual medical content for it.
“I merged my scientific degree with my interest in drawing.”
As an artist, I develop interactive web content and visualizations that explain particular sets of data for NEJM articles, such as incidence of a disease across a range of countries. This impacts how the medical community worldwide understands a problem. We get the data set and study the statistical parameters to see if there is a story behind it. Essentially, we go where the data takes us!

Member Relations | Advocacy and Member Relations
I started in a subsidiary of the MMS, and later transitioned to a role in the Membership Department that offered greater physician interaction. Because of the incredible growth in the use of technology, we're able to encourage more physicians to get involved through webinars and video conferencing and stay in constant contact with them on current medical topics.
“I enjoy setting up seminars and social events because they offer new ways for physicians to interact with each other. It gives them a sense for the breadth and impact of what the MMS offers.”
Through the Committee on Women in Medicine, we developed a women's lecture series that hosts two to three programs each year. The series includes a separate Women's Leadership Forum and educational sessions on patient care topics such as women's cardiac health, HPV, alcoholism, and obesity. Through the work of our committees, we provide physicians with knowledge that directly improves patient care.

Business Intelligence and Analytics | NEJM Group
Prior to joining the MMS, I worked at a direct mail agency. That prepared me for my first role here, and after several additional roles in acquisition, retention, and reporting, I now lead and drive the vision and direction of business intelligence initiatives within NEJM Group. Essentially, I manage the interface between multiple business lines with analyses that support their strategies. And I evangelize for data-driven decision-making at all levels.
“My role didn’t exist 10 years ago, but now data and analysis are used throughout NEJM Group. From an industry perspective, I’ve ridden a current that’s become a tidal wave!”
I direct the analytic function within NEJM Group by managing and budgeting for analytic toolsets, developing key performance indicators, empowering colleagues to perform their own analyses, and supporting most business lines with reporting and analyses. It's incredibly rewarding to know that my efforts help us to achieve business goals, promote engagement, and sell our products and services. This is the fastest pace of innovation and growth I've experienced in all my years here!

Digital Sales Development and Client Services | NEJM Group
I began working at MMS in a marketing role before transitioning into international sales development, and ultimately assumed my current position as Director of Client Services and Digital Sales Development. When moving from Marketing to International, I felt a bit outside of my comfort zone. But the MMS nurtured my strengths and supported my further career development.
“I like the diversity of my job. I feel lucky to have a role that allows for a holistic view of our sales efforts from both an internal and external perspective.”
Involvement in the external market gives me the opportunity to learn from market leaders outside of our space. I then work internally with cross-functional teams from across the business. It's the best of both worlds, really. The digital advertising side of the business has a very different culture compared to our overall business. We're a not-for-profit publisher, but we work in the pharma and advertising fields too. The diversity keeps things interesting!

Investment/Tax Accounting | Corporate Management Services
As an investment accountant, my responsibility is to reconcile and report all of our investment activity for our general reserve, endowment fund, and pension plan. My colleagues and I protect the organization from general tax liability and exposure so that the MMS can continue carrying out its mission.
“My business professor and mentor once said: If you don’t know the mission, it’s probably not a great company to work for.”
My role at the MMS is somewhat similar to my other roles at previous companies where I did investment accounting. But working in the tax department here allows me to gain more knowledge in the tax industry from the perspective of the not-for-profit organization. It's opened up my eyes to everything in the medical world. And of course, our mission is instilled in everything we do.

Software Development | Corporate Management Services
As a software engineer, I lead projects that support the MMS’ membership services area. I’m also involved with our unified content and commerce efforts, developing back-end application programming interface (API) supports for NEJM Group publications and products.
Our technology infrastructure is responsible for all ecommerce, websites, and solutions across the enterprise. It takes a top-notch technology team to ensure that millions of readers and customers worldwide can access our content. It’s a critically important and lifesaving mission, which we saw first-hand during the Covid-19 pandemic.
“It takes a top-notch technology team to ensure that millions of readers and customers worldwide can access our content. It’s a critically important and lifesaving mission, which we saw first-hand during the Covid-19 pandemic.”
My background is entirely in software. I’ve previously worked in financial and insurance settings, but I enjoy the positive, friendly, and supportive work environment here. There’s less “red tape” to deal with, and your colleagues really want you to succeed. For me personally, it’s also important to make a meaningful contribution to a worthy cause.
I like how we’re continuously innovating with new technology and exploring new opportunities for integration and agility. We’ve moved into the cloud and we’re using tech stack to run applications and programs. Those of us who work in technology always want to be learning, and I’m able to do that here.

Editorial Premedia | NEJM Group
In college, I was an English major with a concentration in journalism. I began at the MMS in 2000, hired to do layout and production. At that time, I only worked on the print publication. As time went on, I started working on XML production and publishing articles to the website. My expertise evolved as publishing did, and I was able to grow with the
Journal
as it moved to the web, and now, the latest apps.
“The work I do is integral to getting the Journal out to people around the world — without it, health care professionals wouldn’t have the newest medical research at their disposal.”
Production of the
Journal
relies heavily on technology - from managing the print version pages to overseeing online-first
Journal
articles for iPad, Kindle, and other mobile devices. If there's a need to deliver breaking news or get papers to a conference, we find new ways to do it faster and better.

Clinical Programs & Product Development | NEJM Group
As Director of Product Development, I shepherd new products and services from concept to launch. I plan and coordinate activities around product definition and concept testing, business planning, technical requirements, and feasibility. I work with project teams to create and execute plans for development, launch, and operations. Project management is a big component of the job, as is collaboration and consensus-building with a varied group of stakeholders. New product development is critical to the continued success of NEJM Group. We need to continue to grow and improve our product offerings in order to keep up with the rapid pace of change in health care.
“On a daily basis, I get to collaborate with individuals across the organization – editorial, business, marketing, technology, and more. Every day I learn something new, and uncover new challenges and possibilities.”
I've had the opportunity to work with many different teams and individuals here at the MMS. I love collaborating with intelligent, dedicated people to achieve our business goals. We have a culture of excellence, and quality always comes first.
Bill
Counsel | Corporate Management Services
My primary responsibility is corporate law. In the course of a typical day, I might negotiate contracts and agreements, draft real estate documents, review materials prior to publication, and advise the MMS' ethics committee. The work is varied and interesting, and each day is different.
“I appreciate being able to use all of the legal skills I've developed through my education and experience to support an organization with the objective of improving health care.”
I'd previously worked for a variety of other high-functioning health care law departments, but the environment at the MMS has been, by far, the most collegial. I get to practice law in a positive, collaborative, and supportive environment. It's a great feeling to know that my work is valued by my colleagues and supervisors, as well as my clients.

Health Policy & Public Health | Advocacy & Member Relations
In my role, I oversee the team responsible for the development of the MMS’ policy and public health initiatives. We create awareness of important public health issues and promote an effective public health system to achieve the greatest impact on the health and well-being of our fellow citizens in communities throughout Massachusetts.
We work with other organizations to advance the MMS’ mission to educate and advocate on behalf of physicians and patients. For instance, a major focus over the past several years has been addressing the opioid epidemic. I serve as a liaison to our Opioid Task Force, which has guided state policy on prescribing guidelines and other patient-focused initiatives. We’ve also designed outreach campaigns on tobacco control, violence intervention, emergency preparedness, and protecting access to care for underserved populations.
“I’m able to interact with some of the brightest, most committed health care professionals in the world.”
I love working with the physicians who volunteer at the MMS, and with health care leaders and advocacy groups across Massachusetts. I’m able to interact with some of the brightest, most committed health care professionals in the world. As a highly respected organization, the MMS is invited to be around many tables and provide a leadership voice on health care. I’m proud to tell others where I work.
