Massachusetts Medical Society-accredited providers of continuing
medical education (CME) may encounter circumstances whereby they
are unable to comply with the established deadlines for
re-accreditation. The MMS may grant an extension to the
current accreditation term under the following guidelines.
A request for an extension must be submitted in writing or via electronic mail addressed to the Manager, MMS Recognized Accreditor Program outlining the reason for the extension request. The Manager is given the authority by the Committee on Accreditation Review (CAR) to grant an initial 4-month extension when warranted.
If a provider requests an extension beyond 4 months, the request must be submitted in writing or via electronic mail addressed to the Chair, Committee on Accreditation Review (CAR) outlining the reason for the extension request. The request will be reviewed and decided upon by the Chair in consultation with the Manager, MMS Recognized Accreditor Program and/or the CAR. While the request for the extension is in deliberation, the current survey date remains active. MMS will notify the provider of the decision on the extension in writing.
Accreditation extensions will not be granted beyond eight
months. If an accredited provider is unable to submit the
required re-accreditation materials by the specified due date for
the extension, the provider's accreditation term will expire as of
the date of the extension. The accredited provider's
status will change to non-accreditation as of the expiration
date.
Providers who seek re-accreditation after being placed in
non-accreditation status within a one-year period from the date of
non-accreditation will be required to submit an initial Self Study
Report in lieu of a Pre-Application.
