Future Health: Best Practices for Advancing Care - Physician Well-Being - Speaker Bios

Mark J. Albanese, MDMark J. Albanese, MD
Medical Director, Physician Health Services, Inc.

Mark J. Albanese is the medical director of Physician Health Services (PHS), a nonprofit 501(c)3 subsidiary of the Massachusetts Medical Society (MMS). Prior to PHS, Dr. Albanese was at the Cambridge Health Alliance (CHA), where his roles included director of Addictions and director of Outpatient Psychiatry. He is an assistant professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and continues to teach at CHA. He is a longtime MMS member and has served on the PHS Clinical Advisory Committee for more than 20 years.

Dr. Albanese is board-certified in both psychiatry and addiction psychiatry. He is a graduate of Harvard College and Weill Cornell Medical College of Cornell University. He trained at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Massachusetts Mental Health Center.


Alain Chaoui, MD, FAAPAlain Chaoui, MD, FAAP
President, Congenial Healthcare, LLC

Alain Chaoui is a primary care physician and president of Congenial Healthcare, LLC, a private practice group with multiple sites on the north shore of Boston that was formed in January 2018. Dr. Chaoui was previously in solo private practice at Family Medicine North in Peabody. An active member of the Massachusetts Medical Society, Dr. Chaoui is a member of the Board of Trustees and House of Delegates and is past chairman of the Committee on Membership. He is also the current Chair of the Massachusetts Delegation to the American Medical Association.

Dr. Chaoui is dedicated to medical education, instilling in future physicians and nurse practitioners a love of medicine and pride in the profession and teaching them how to be excellent health care providers. He holds teaching positions at Tufts University School of Medicine, Boston University School of Medicine, Boston College School of Nursing, and Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. He has received numerous honors and awards including recognition by Connolly’s Top Doctors for 2017 and 2018. Dr. Chaoui received his Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery from Ain Shams University, Faculty of Medicine, in Egypt and completed his residency at Akron City Hospital and Saint Thomas Hospital of the Summa Health System in Akron, Ohio.

Ted A. James is a medical director and vice chair of Surgery at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, MA. He also serves as faculty director for health care strategy and leadership development at Harvard Medical School’s Executive Education programs.

Dr. James is an advocate for health care quality improvement and involved in initiatives with the local and national organizations aimed at improving quality in health care. He has led programs with the Institute for Health Care Improvement, the National Academy of Medicine, and the Association of American Medical Colleges. He currently serves as vice chair of the Committee of Quality Medical Practice for the Massachusetts Medical Society.

He is actively involved in health care delivery research and conducts outcomes research to address patient experiences, clinical outcomes, and quality in cancer care delivery. His work has been presented at national scientific conferences and he has published extensively in the field of quality improvement in oncology.

Dr. James enjoys partnering with other health care professionals to develop practical solutions to modern health care challenges.

Dr. James also serves as faculty for professional and executive leadership development programs at Harvard Medical School, the Institute for Healthcare Improvement and the Association of American Medical Colleges. Dr. James’s leadership roles in local and national organizations are aimed at improving the quality of health care, clinical education and health services research. He enjoys sharing his experience and partnering with other health care professionals to develop practical solutions to modern health care challenges. His mission is to improve patient care through research, education and innovation.


Amy E. Vinson, MD, FAAPAmy E. Vinson, MD, FAAP
Assistant Professor of Anesthesia, Boston Children’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School
Chief Wellness Officer, Department of Anesthesiology, Critical Care and Pain Medicine, Boston Children’s Hospital

Amy E. Vinson is a pediatrician and pediatric anesthesiologist at Boston Children’s Hospital and an assistant professor of anesthesia at Harvard Medical School. She attended college and medical school in Georgia before coming to New England where she completed a residency in pediatrics at Brown, an anesthesiology residency at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and a pediatric anesthesiology fellowship at Boston Children’s Hospital. She has a long-standing interest in well-being, burnout, peer support, and substance use disorder in anesthesiologists and has lectured widely on these subjects. She established wellness programs at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Boston Children’s Hospital and has consulted on the formation of many other programs throughout the country.

Dr. Vinson currently serves as the chair of the American Society of Anesthesiologists’ (ASA) Committee on Physician Well-being, is the ASA representative to the National Academy of Medicine’s Action Collaborative on Clinician Well-being and Resilience and is the chief wellness officer for her department. Her research on Burnout in Anesthesiologists, the largest such study of anesthesiologists to date, was recently published in Anesthesiology and she has numerous other publications and research manuscripts on subjects related to overall physician well-being. She is a self-described “well-being pragmatist” focusing on systemic and organizational factors impacting well-being and burnout.
