Massachusetts Medical Society: MMS District Scholarships

MMS District Scholarships

Berkshire District Medical Society Medical School or School of Osteopathic Medicine Scholarship Loan

A scholarship loan of $1,000 per year for medical students who are residents of Berkshire County, Massachusetts, was established in September 1961 when the members of the Berkshire District Medical Society approved of a yearly assessment to fund the program. The amount was increased to $1,500 in 1974 and then increased to $5,000. On March 31, 2021, it was voted to increase the amount to be awarded up to $10,000.

In addition, it was voted that if the awardee returns to Berkshire County to practice as a primary physician and stays for 3 years, 1/3 of the loan would be forgiven each year the awardee practices in Berkshire County.

Scholarships require that recipients be bona fide residents of Berkshire County already accepted at an approved medical school in the United States or Canada. Funds will be paid directly to the school of choice.

The award, known as the Berkshire District Medical Society Revolving Scholarship Loan, was established on a revolving basis so that the repaid funds would help as many medical students as possible. Recipients sign agreements pledging to begin repayment of the scholarship loan the year of graduation, with half of the amount to be repaid in four years and the balance in two additional years.

This is regarded as a moral obligation and is treated as a contribution to provide more scholarships in the future. Recipients are asked to consider serving residencies in Berkshire County hospitals.

The Dr. Max and Ida L. Millman Foundation and the Hampden District Medical Society Scholarship/Loan Fund

In June 1976, shortly after the sudden and unexpected death of Dr. Max Millman and at the instigation of Mrs. Max Millman, the Society established the scholarship loan fund as a tribute to the late Dr. Millman. Dr. Millman, was at that time, the editor of the Hampden Hippocrat, he was a prominent internist and pioneer cardiologist beloved and respected by his colleagues and patients.

Contributions to the fund were received from his many friends and colleagues both in the community and in the Hampden District Medical Society. His wife, Ida L. Millman, contributed $25,000 to the fund. The interest from this fund, is to be used for the annual scholarship loans awarded to applicants in medical school from Hampden County. Contributions to the fund can be used for memorials and in celebration of events by contacting the district society office.

Every September, up to three $2,000 scholarship loans are issued.

Eligibility:

  • Applicant will be accepted or enrolled to an accredited medical school or osteopathic medical school. The scholarship loan is available to freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors.
  • Applicant’s family must be a resident of Hampden County.

Due to the high burden of medical school debt, the Dr. Max & Ida Millman Foundation Scholarship Loan is providing forgiveness of paying back the scholarship loan. The loan forgiveness applies upon completion of medical studies, that the recipient returns to Western Massachusetts to practice medicine for 1 year.

If the recipient chooses to work in any area other than Western Massachusetts, the scholarship loan must be paid back. The scholarship loan is given at 0% interest and must be repaid after residency and specialty training is completed and the physician has been in practice for three years. Up to three $2,000 scholarship loans are awarded each year. The deadline for applications is September 1.
