Norfolk South District News

Note from Dr. Janet C. Limke, long-time member of the district.

Walking is SO GOOD for you! It’s low impact and easier on the joints than running. Walking is safe and helpful for people with orthopedic ailments, heart conditions, and those who are overweight. Walk with a Doc is a program for everyone interested in taking steps for a healthier lifestyle. In the first few minutes you will learn about a health topic from a professional, then spend the rest of the hour enjoying a nice walk-in nature and fun conversation. It’s a great way to get out, get active, and enjoy all the benefits that come from walking. You will walk at your own pace and comfortable distance.

We hope you will share the information with your patients and join us as well.

The walk is the 2nd Saturday of each month, and we will meet at Houghton’s Pond in Milton, MA. Weather permitting.

You will find information to register here:

Dr. Brian J. Battista honored by Norfolk South District Medical Society with the newly established Bartley G. Cilento, Sr., MD, Distinguished Service Award.

Brian Battista

The Norfolk South District Medical Society created a new award named in honor of a beloved friend and colleague and a longtime member of the district - The Bartley G. Cilento, Sr., MD, Distinguished Service Award.

The district officers and members of our executive committee wanted to honor Dr. Cilento as he was in many ways the one constant for the district society, not only as a longstanding member but also having served as the district secretary for close to 40 years. Dr. Cilento kept the district vigorous and on course through the attention paid to his duties as secretary and his unceasing recruitment of local physicians to join the society and to participate actively.

Over the decades, he recruited members for active involvement in committee work and leadership at both the district and state level. His contributions to and accomplishments in the Norfolk South District Medical Society are unmatched. Furthermore, all those who worked with Dr. Cilento have a story to share about his kindness and humility. The district presented the first award to Dr. Brian Battista.

Dr. Brian Battista has made lasting contributions to the practice of medicine and service to the Massachusetts Medical Society.

Dr. Battista is a recently retired internal medicine physician from Weymouth and a dedicated member of the district society since 1982. Brian has served on many committees throughout his years as an active member of the district. A delegate since 1984, he also served on the Finance, Bylaws, Judicial, and Men’s Health Committees, among others. He also served as district treasurer for several terms.

Dr. Francis (Frank) Duggan honored by the Norfolk South District Medical Society for the 2024 Community Clinician of the Year Award

Frank Duggan Norfolk South CCYA 2024
Norfolk South District Medical Society past president Dr. Janet Limke with Norfolk South's 2024 Community Clinician of the Year Dr. Francis (Frank) Duggan

WALTHAM – Dr. Frank Duggan, an emergency physician from Hingham, has been honored by the Norfolk South District Medical Society as their 2024 Community Clinician of the Year awardee.

Duggan is recognized for his ongoing commitment to helping care for patients during his more than 20 years as a physician.

He has spent his personal time volunteering across the world, logging well over 20,000 hours of patient care in dozens of countries, including Cambodia, Haiti, Kenya, and Nicaragua, and, most recently, Ukraine where he provided supplies and assistance to locals impacted by war.

In 2014, he founded Health Care Volunteers International (HCVI). Through this organization, Duggan has outfitted six Ukrainian hospitals with HCVI Digital Health platforms and equipment, including power generators, high-definition cameras and microscopes, video monitors, and high-speed Wi-Fi. HCVI is engaged in numerous large-scale projects, primarily in the eastern part of the country, and has brought in over $4 million of desperately needed medications, equipment, and supplies. Dr. Duggan has made six trips totaling approximately 8 months’ time in Ukraine since the beginning of the war. The majority of his time in country has been spent working closely with military surgeons and anesthesiologists at the Eastern Front providing trauma care and performing stabilization surgery.

He encourages any physicians and other healthcare providers who are interested in international volunteer work to visit the HCVI website, https://www.hcvi.org/, or to contact him by email at FrankDuggan@hcvi.org.
