Effective April 1, 2024, insurers are required to cover an “annual mental health wellness exam” to improve patient access to mental and behavioral health care in compliance with Chapter 177 of the Acts of 2022, An Act Addressing Barriers to Care
for Mental Health. Massachusetts is the second state in the nation to offer this exam, which may be performed by a primary care physician or a licensed behavioral health clinician. Providers will be reimbursed using an identified procedure code, diagnosis
code, and modifier in compliance with the Division of Insurance Bulletin 2024−02.
