Compelled by an alarming increase in vaping and e-cigarette use among young patients – a 2018 survey of high school students revealed a 78 percent increase in use in just one year – the Massachusetts Medical Society in May of 2019 adopted organizational
policy declaring it would work with Massachusetts lawmakers and officials to develop strategies to prevent marketing, sales, and use of e-cigarettes and other nicotine delivery products among children. The Massachusetts Medical Society worked in collaboration
with other public health leaders and lawmakers on the advocacy front and in June of 2020, the Commonwealth became the first state in the nation to end the sale of all flavored tobacco products, including menthol.
