Massachusetts Medical Society encourages mask use amid rise in respiratory illnesses

Physicians across Massachusetts are seeing a significant rise in respiratory viruses like flu, COVID-19, and RSV, causing illness and further straining capacity and resources in emergency departments, hospitals, and physicians’ offices.

The Massachusetts Medical Society, along with several of our state’s health systems, is encouraging the use of masks by those who work at, seek care at, or visit any health care setting, as well as by those who gather in crowded indoor settings, until there is a satisfactory decrease in prevalence and transmission of these diseases in our communities. It is particularly important for those who have symptoms of illness, including fever, cough, difficulty breathing, congestion, runny nose, or sore throat, to consider masking when they are in the presence of others.

These infections should not be taken lightly. Unfortunately, many people infected with respiratory viruses will not recover quickly; and we know that for some patients, especially those who are most vulnerable, these diseases can lead to hospitalization, serious illness, or death.

Along with masking, the Medical Society recommends the adoption of other proven public health measures to reduce the spread of illness. These include stay home when sick, get vaccinated to reduce the severity of flu, RSV, and COVID-19, practice frequent hand hygiene, cover coughs and sneezes, and disinfect high-touch surfaces.

If you need help dealing with symptoms of respiratory illness or have questions about vaccinations, please contact your physician or health care team.
