WALTHAM – Dr. Eméfah C. Loccoh, an internal medicine resident at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, has been awarded the Massachusetts Medical Society’s (MMS) 2024 Underrepresented Physicians of Tomorrow Award.
The award, established in 2022, recognizes an underrepresented-in-medicine (URM) student or trainee who has demonstrated exemplary advocacy, scholarship, community engagement, and leadership in medicine. The recipient is selected by the Medical Society’s
Minority Affairs Section. The Section’s priorities include the development of policies and initiatives that provide career advancement and leadership opportunities for underrepresented physicians and increases participation and mentorship in the
MMS.
Dr. Loccoh is a graduate of The Ohio State University School of Medicine. She is a former Sarnoff Cardiovascular Research fellow, an inductee of the Gold Humanism Honor Society, a Fulbright Research fellow, and a mentor with the MV3 Foundation Professional
Development Program.
“During medical school, I witnessed the devastating impacts of cardiovascular disease when my father suffered a massive hemorrhagic stroke that resulted in global aphasia and complete right-sided paralysis,” Dr. Loccoh said. “As a result, I took a
leave of absence from medical school for a year to serve as his caregiver and assist in his recovery. Shortly thereafter, my mother was diagnosed with heart failure. These personal experiences have fostered my desire to become a cardiologist and
health services researcher who is committed to improving access to cardiovascular care for the underserved.”
