WALTHAM – Dr. Mario Motta, a retired cardiologist from Gloucester, has been honored by the Massachusetts Medical Society as the 2023 recipient of its Award for Distinguished Service.
Motta practiced for many years in the cardiovascular division of North Shore Physicians Group and also spent time at Salem Hospital and Union Hospital.
A past president of the Massachusetts Medical Society, Motta served the organization as chair of the Committee on Legislation and the Committee on Quality and Cost Control. He is also a past president of the Essex South District Medical Society. His longstanding
involvement with the American Medical Association includes several years as a trustee and as a representative of the MMS delegation.
“During his tenure as Massachusetts Medical Society president and in his prior role as chair of the (MMS) Committee on Legislation, and later chairing the task force on health care reform, Dr. Motta kept a laser focus on health care reform and advocacy
for patients, especially seniors and those most at-risk for poor health,” said Dr. Carole Allen, immediate past president of the MMS. “I have many times heard him describe problems around prescription access for his cardiology patients in ways that
make clear to colleagues and legislators what the pertinent issues are.”
An accomplished educator, Motta is an associate professor of medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine and a clinical instructor of astrophysics at Tufts University. He is a graduate of Boston College and Tufts University School of Medicine.
His volunteer work includes service to the Medford Board of Health, the Lynnfield Public Schools, the Museum of Science and the Wingarsheek Beach Association.
