WALTHAM – Dr. Megan Miller, an obstetrician and gynecologist at Baystate Medical Center, has been honored by the Massachusetts Medical Society as the 2023 recipient of the Women’s Health Award, which recognizes a physician for outstanding contributions advancing Women’s Health in Massachusetts. Candidates are nominated by their peers and selected by the Committee on Women’s Health.

“Dr. Miller has been with Baystate since 2017. Within her first year with us, Dr. Miller initiated a task force for Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) in Pregnancy and has continued to co-chair this group,” said Dr. Heather Sankey of Baystate Medical Center. “She has been instrumental in developing an OUD in Pregnancy clinic, developing guidelines and protocols for initiating medications for opioid use disorder for pregnant people and widely expanding the number of providers in our department who have an X waiver to prescribe this therapy.

“She has led the expansion of our efforts for rooming-in for newborns exposed to substances in utero and to support the babies going home safely with their parents. Dr. Miller’s efforts have not been limited to our department. She has joined in the system-wide addiction work, and recently became board certified as an Addiction Medicine Specialist. She is passionate and has inspired her colleagues to step up and advocate for patients with OUD. She is also actively involved in our DEI work within the department since this group of women is often marginalized.”

Miller, a graduate of Muhlenberg College and Drexel University College of Medicine, is an assistant professor at UMass Chan Medical School-Baystate. She is co-chair of Baystate’s Addiction Task Force.
