WALTHAM – Marcella Jewell, a student from UMass Chan Medical School’s class of 2024, has been named the recipient of the 2022 Massachusetts Medical Society Information Technology Award.
The honor recognizes the development of an information technology tool that helps physicians practice medicine, teach medicine, or pursue clinical research and comes with a $5,000 award.
Jewell’s award-winning work focused on the development of a pediatric behavioral health tracking dashboard aimed at addressing the nationwide crisis of “boarding,” or patients being cared for in emergency departments after it has been determined that
they need a higher level of care but encounter a shortage of available inpatient beds.
Jewell graduated from Skidmore College in 2015 with a Bachelor of Arts in government and a minor in computer science. She worked in the Midwest as a state director for the Hillary Clinton campaign and as a management consultant.
She returned home to Massachusetts in 2017 and began as the research coordinator for the pediatric emergency department at Baystate Medical Center, under the mentorship of the department chief Dr. Joeli Hettler, a role she has maintained throughout medical
school. Jewell also collaborates with the Department of Healthcare Delivery and Population Science at Baystate and the Department of Emergency Medicine at UMass Chan in Worcester on other research projects.
Jewell is also a collaborator with the Department of Healthcare Delivery and Population Science. Her work spans multiple domains, including economic analysis, state-wide advocacy, quality improvement, and information technology. Over the years, she has
served on hospital committees and presented her work at multiple national academic conferences. This year, she was a participant in the Value Based Healthcare Intensive Seminar at Harvard Business School and first authored a publication in the NEJM
Catalyst.
