The MMS has developed model bylaws to help hospital medical staffs draft or revise their bylaws. The MMS model:
- Is based on Massachusetts laws and regulations and Massachusetts Medical Society policy and its principles for incident-based peer review.
- Protects quality physician practices by preserving medical staff self-governance and promoting physician involvement in every aspect of clinical practice in the hospital setting.
- Provides help with such challenges issues as codes of conduct, allegations of disruptive behavior, and conflicts of interest. The MMS model demonstrates solutions to issues that might otherwise create division or be used to put economics before quality patient care.
The model bylaws do not constitute legal advice. The Massachusetts Medical Society reminds medical staffs to consult their independent medical staff legal counsel before adopting bylaws language.
