When the MMS
Scholars Awards were first discussed in 1991 the average personal debt of a
graduating medical student in Massachusetts was $75,000. The debt continues to grow as documented by
increased tuition, room and board, and fees.
Since the first awards were given in May 1993 this program has been
heralded as a valuable assistance to medical students and it has created much
good will between the Massachusetts Medical Society and medical schools and
students.
In 2017, the MMS
celebrates its 25th year of the Scholars Awards reflecting more than
$2million granted to over 200 graduating medical students from Boston
University School of Medicine, Harvard Medical School, Tufts University Medical
School and University of Massachusetts Medical School.
