Massachusetts Medical Society: Physicians and Trainees Advocate for Their Young Patients on Beacon Hill

Physicians and Trainees Advocate for Their Young Patients on Beacon Hill

Trainees Advocate

On May 30, more than 75 Boston-area pediatric trainees and attendings received legislative advocacy training from Alex Calcagno, the MMS’s director of advocacy, government, and community relations. The occasion was the annual Residents and Fellows Day at the State House (RFDASH), when the next generation of pediatricians meet with legislators to advocate for bills that are critical to their patients. This year, they championed a statewide ban on all flavored tobacco products whose advertising targets teens and young adults, a mental health parity bill, and a measure that would fill in gaps in health coverage for undocumented children. The day is organized by MassGeneral Hospital for Children residents, and supported by medical students and residents from Boston Combined Residency Program, UMass, and Tufts.
