Massachusetts physicians can now learn to implement safer strategies for pain management through a free continuing medical education program provided by NEJM Knowledge+.
The new module, Pain Management and Opioids, is delivered via the NEJM Knowledge+ adaptive learning platform and was created in partnership with Boston University School of Medicine’s SCOPE of Pain. It features more than 60 case-based questions that reflect the types of cases experienced in daily practice. Physicians will learn:
-
The fundamental concepts of pain management, including definitions and mechanisms of pain
- How to assess patients in pain while identifying risk factors for abuse and addiction
-
The range of therapeutic options for managing pain, including non-pharmacologic approaches and pharmacologic (non-opioid and opioid analgesics) therapies
-
How to integrate opioid analgesics into a pain treatment plan — individualized to the needs of the patient
-
How to safely and effectively manage patients on opioid analgesics in acute and chronic pain settings, including initiating therapy, titrating, and discontinuing use of opioid analgesics
-
How to counsel patients and caregivers about the safe use of opioid analgesics, including proper storage and disposal
-
How to counsel patients and caregivers about the use of naloxone for opioid overdose
-
When referral to a pain specialist is appropriate
- The fundamental elements of addiction medicine
-
How to identify and manage patients with opioid use disorder
Pain Management and Opioids is being offered free of charge through an unrestricted education grant from the Opioid Analgesic Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategies (REMS) Program Companies to deliver high-quality pain management and opioid continuing medical education to health care providers.
Pain Management and Opioids was written by experts in pain management and addiction and covers the FDA’s Opioid Analgesic REMS Education Blueprint for Health Care Providers Involved in the Treatment and Monitoring of Patients with Pain. It is the most efficient way to review the current, evidence-based clinical knowledge of opioid analgesics.
