Advocacy is a central component of the Massachusetts Medical Society's mission. We advocate
on behalf of patients for a better health care system, and on behalf of physicians, to help them to provide the best care possible.
The Medical Society provides patient-centered physician advocacy in the State House, Congress, and in courts on a range of critical issues affecting the practice of medicine and your patients’ access to care. Learn more about the issues we advocate for

MMS in Action – Public Health Legislation
The Massachusetts Medical Society was heavily involved in the passage of the 2019 state tobacco control law, which prohibits retail sales of all flavored tobacco products, including menthol cigarettes. As a founding member of the Tobacco Free Mass Coalition,
MMS has advocated for decades to fight tobacco and nicotine and their devastating effects, especially in support of efforts to prevent our youth from becoming addicted to nicotine. The Medical Society testified in support of the 2019 law and advocated for its passage through engaging our membership – this victory would not have been possible without the dedicated support of our members.
