Mpox (formerly monkeypox) is a rare disease caused by infection with the mpox virus, a member of the Orthopoxvirus genus in the family Poxviridae, the same family of viruses as that causes smallpox. Mpox symptoms are similar to smallpox
symptoms but are usually milder. Mpox is not related to chickenpox. In May 2022, multiple cases of mpox were identified in several non-endemic countries. The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the 2022 mpox outbreak a public health emergency of international concern. The White House has declared mpox a public health emergency.
